PROGRAMME
The host of the Project in 2005 was Hohere Lehr-Anstalt Umwelt u. Wirtshaft, in Ysper, Lower Austria.
Group devision:
- Examining the humus content
Humus is the organic component of soil that determines the biological forms of life in soil and the nitrogen and water content. The students examined the humus content in the school chemistry laboratory.
- Determinig soil type
In the laboratory the students drew a soil profile, determined soil type, evaluated physical sorption in soil, examined constancy of soil structure.
- Examining water content and field capacity in soil
- Describing plant species
The students used plant atlases to determine the names of plants they had collected in designated areas.
- Describing soil fauna
The students analysed soil samples directly and using microscopes. They tried to find microorganisms and aquinted themselves with mineral content of soil.
- Determinig soil acidity and calcium content
The students used a ph-metre to determine soil acidity.
- Examining potassium and phosphorus contents
Phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium are the main components of soil which determine its fertility. The students determined phosphorus and potassium from soil samples.
- Heavy metals in soils
